How to Claim Income Tax Refund in Pakistan?

In Pakistan, income tax refunds are available if you’ve paid more tax than your actual liability—but only if you file your return. Taxpayers can apply online under Section 170 for a refund, adjust excess tax against future liabilities, or carry it forward to the next tax year. Salaried employees may offset refunds against salary deductions.

In Pakistan, getting an income tax refund is possible if you’ve overpaid your dues compared to your actual tax liability. However, there’s one key requirement: filing your income tax return. Without it, refunds are off the table.

If you’ve filed your return and see a refund amount, you can choose to:

  • Apply online (Section 170) for a full refund to your account.
  • Adjust the refund amount against future tax liabilities.
  • File your refund application immediately after filing of Tax Return to get claim accepted or to carry forward such refund in next Tax Year Filing. For example If one file Tax Return for 2024 ,they shall file refund application alongwith all the necessary evidence.

If you’re a salaried employee, you can adjust excess taxes against your salary deductions.

Understanding Tax Types:

  • Adjustable: Can be used for the current year, claimed as refunds, or carried forward to next year. (Applies to manufacturers and listed companies for goods and services taxes.)
  • Final: No adjustments or refunds allowed. (Applies to most goods and services taxes.)
  • Minimum: Only adjusted against current year liability, no carry-forward or refunds.

Important Notes:

Remember, filing your return is the first step to claiming your refund. With proper documentation and patience, you can get your hard-earned money back!
