Islamabad, Pakistan:Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed a unified effort by key government agencies to combat tax evasion, undocumented sales, and price manipulation in Pakistan’s sugar industry. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), and Intelligence Bureau have been tasked with implementing stringent measures ahead of the upcoming sugar crushing season.
The Prime Minister’s Office announced that the measures aim to ensure full compliance with General Sales Tax (GST) requirements, enhance transparency, and stabilize sugar prices. To achieve this, PM Shehbaz mandated the installation of surveillance cameras at sugar mills to monitor production and prevent hoarding. He warned sugar mill owners against engaging in illicit practices, emphasizing that violators would face strict legal repercussions.
“No increase in sugar prices will be tolerated,” PM Shehbaz declared, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to protecting consumers from undue financial pressures.
In addition to targeting the sugar industry, the Prime Minister instructed authorities to apply similar crackdowns in other sectors, including steel, cement, cigarettes, and beverages, which are also prone to tax evasion and unregulated sales. A formal notification has been issued for immediate enforcement of these directives.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader economic strategy to enhance tax compliance, tackle inefficiencies, and ensure fair market practices. Experts have commended the move, highlighting the significant revenue losses and price volatility caused by evasion and undocumented transactions in the sugar sector. The installation of cameras is seen as a critical step toward improving oversight and accountability.
However, industry representatives have voiced concerns about potential overregulation, warning that excessive scrutiny could disrupt production efficiency. Despite these reservations, the government remains resolute in its mission to address malpractice and secure consumer interests.
As the sugar crushing season begins, the coordinated efforts of the FBR, FIA, and Intelligence Bureau will be instrumental in ensuring compliance and maintaining price stability. The government’s decisive stance reflects its commitment to strengthening the nation’s economic framework and safeguarding public welfare.
