Islamabad, Pakistan – In a display of widespread discontent, traders, small businesses, and even national clothing brands joined a nationwide strike on Wednesday in protest against the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) “Tajir Dost Scheme.” The strike effectively shut down the federal capital, Islamabad, with participation from tea stalls, restaurants, and tandoors, alongside major markets and high-end stores.
The strike, backed by political parties like Jamaat-e-Islami and JUI-F, targeted the controversial tax scheme introduced by the FBR. Ajmal Baloch, head of the All Pakistan Traders’ Union, condemned the scheme and the FBR, calling them “corrupt” and “dishonest.”
Why the Anger?
Traders are vehemently opposed to the “Tajir Dost Scheme” which proposes collecting advance income tax based on an “indicative income” determined by location and area of operation, regardless of a business’s actual performance. This system has been criticized for unfairly burdening struggling businesses with additional tax obligations.
