Karachi topped the list by contributing an impressive total of Rs2,522 billion in taxes during the reviewed period. This remarkable performance was attributed primarily to the city’s Large Tax Office (LTO), which demonstrated exceptional efficiency in tax collection. The breakdown of Karachi’s tax contributions reveals over Rs1,360 billion collected in income tax, marking it as a substantial share of the city’s overall tax revenues. Additionally, the LTO Karachi collected Rs136.3 million in federal excise duty and over Rs1,000 billion in sales tax, further solidifying the city’s dominance in tax contributions.

Lahore secured the second position in the ranking, with its LTO collecting a total of over Rs1,402 billion. The city showed significant growth and efficiency in tax collection, reflecting its pivotal role in the national economy. Islamabad followed closely behind, ranking third, with its LTO contributing Rs1,164 billion in taxes. Both cities demonstrated strong performance but still fell short of Karachi’s unparalleled figures.

This report underscores Karachi’s pivotal role in Pakistan’s fiscal framework and highlights the contributions of other major cities like Lahore and Islamabad. The FBR’s findings provide insights into the distribution of tax contributions across the country, serving as a critical benchmark for policymakers and economic strategists.
