FBR Struggles to Resolve Rs. 3.76 Trillion in Pending Tax Cases

Islamabad, Pakistan – The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is facing significant challenges in resolving a backlog of tax cases worth Rs. 3.76 trillion. These cases are pending before various courts, including the Supreme Court, High Courts, and Appellate Tribunals.

The volume of pending tax cases has increased substantially in recent years, putting pressure on the FBR to expedite their resolution. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also urged the FBR to address this issue. Pro Pakistani

The Supreme Court has 3,450 cases worth Rs. 105 billion pending. The Islamabad High Court has 780 cases worth Rs. 160 billion, and the Sindh High Court has 390 billion worth of cases unresolved. The Lahore High Court has 4,670 cases worth over Rs. 180 billion, while the Peshawar High Court has 400 cases worth Rs. 8 billion.

Additionally, there are 71,300 cases worth Rs. 2.23 trillion pending at Appellate Tribunals. The FBR’s inability to resolve these cases is hindering its efforts to improve tax compliance and increase revenue collection.
